Classifications

Not all cadets who join the ATC can expect to receive promotion. However, all cadets can progress through the training system and, by passing exams, achieve different classifications. Cadets who complete the academic syllabus are awarded a BTEC in Aviation Studies by the organisation!

The classification structure is as follows:

First Class

When a new cadet joins the Air Training Corps they become a Junior Cadet and begin their basic training, which should take around 6 month. They learn:

• The Air Training Corps
• Uniform & Drill
• The Royal Air Force
• The History of Flight
• Initial Expedition Training
• Basic Radio Communications
• Map Reading
• Basic Principles of Airmanship

Leading

First Class Cadets undertake training towards Leading Cadet & during this training they will learn the basic navigation using map and compass, as well as how aircraft fly, and the 'Highway Code' of the Sky. To be eligible to sit the examinations, a cadet must be a First Class Cadet and have completed the syllabus training.

The syllabus content is as follows:

• Principles of Flight
• Basic Navigation Using Map and Compass
• Airmanship Knowledge

Senior

To be eligible to sit Senior Cadet exams, a cadet must be a Leading Cadet and have completed the syllabus training.

The syllabus content is any three of the following subjects:

• Air Navigation
• Propulsion
• Aircraft Handling
• Advanced Radio and Radar
• Pilot Navigation
• Airframes
• Operational Flying
• Satellite Communications

Master

Cadets who have achieved the Master Air Cadet classification have completed their academic training and can attain a BTEC in Aviation Studies on completion of the syllabus.

The syllabus content is any three of the following subjects, not already undertaken for Senior:

• Air Navigation
• Propulsion
• Aircraft Handling
• Advanced Radio and Radar
• Pilot Navigation
• Airframes
• Operational Flying
• Satellite Communications

Instructor

Master Cadets who then complete a Methods of Instruction Course & Assessment are advanced to Instructor Cadet. These cadets can assist in the running of the Squadron and can teach more junior cadets.
